Mr. Kartik Hariharan

Specialist orthopaedic foot & ankle surgery and medico-legal services.

Mr. Kartik Hariharan (known by his friends and patients as “Hari”) is an internationally renowned foot & ankle surgeon who has been practicing foot & ankle surgery since 1995. He works as a full time Consultant in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

He has been the Clinical Lead for the Foot & Ankle Centre of Excellence based in Ysbytty Ystrad Fawr in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in South Wales until 2018.

He has served as President of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) in 2011-2012 after serving as Chairman of Education. Following his time as President he is now a trustee of BOFAS and plays an active role within the organisation. He has also previously served as a specialist advisor for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).

He is Chairman of the Clinical Commissioning Group for Foot & Ankle Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons.

He is also the Clinical Lead for Value Based Healthcare at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board where he is part of a team promoting healthcare based on patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).

He has also previously served as Medical Director of Newport County Football Club and specialist foot and ankle surgeon for Newport Gwent Dragons RFC.

Other Awards:

In 2019, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), the highest honour that can be conferred by the IOA, in recognition of his services to foot & ankle education.

He has pioneered many procedures in foot and ankle surgery and has a large portfolio of published research.

He is an internationally respected lecturer, and continues to lecture at conferences around the world.

He has been awarded several prestigious lectures and orations, including::

• The Naughton Dunn Lecture in 2015, awarded by the British Orthopaedic Association.

• The Ram Janam Sulakshana Pandey Oration in 2016, awarded by the Indian Foot and Ankle Society.

• The Sir Rowland Hughes Memorial Oration in 2017, awarded by the Welsh Orthopaedic Association.

Mr, Hariharan is also an honorary lecturer at Dundee University and a Clinical Teacher at Cardiff University.

He had been a member of the Postgraduate Training Committee for orthopaedics in Wales for many years until 2017.
